Transportation in Shanghai
Taxi and Car Rental
A quick word about transportation. Taxi is still the most convenient way, unless you are going from Puxi to PuDong. Subway- however, is the fastest - especially if your desination is near one of the subway lines. More and more Chinese are driving their own cars now and I can tell the traffic is starting to get bad. Even though licenses are controlled, the push of VW and GM plants to sell more cars is evident. What used to be a fleet of taxis and delivery vehicles on the road, now a number of shiny new black Buicks mixed in.

Shanghai Track Transportation - Subway
If you are within a few blocks of the subway, there is relief for those long hauls across the bridge to Pudong. Shanghai's subway system is terrific and getting better all the time. For 3 RMB, we can ride from JiangSu ( where we are in Puxi) to DongFang Lu (where our new place is in less than 20 minutes. The subway is clean (not a mark of graffiti anywhere in site), safe, and very fast. There are 2 different lines ( 2 subways) that all converge at Peoples Square. It really is a credit to the city. It is crowded at rush hour and you will have to stand sometimes, but it is so easy and quick, I do not really mind. There are 2 major subway lines. They meet in Peoples Square. One goes along from the Train Station, though Peoples Square to Huai Hai Lu, XuJia Hui, Hengshan Road and off to the southwest. The other goes from Zhongshan Park, along Nanjing Lu, under the river to Pudong, Century Park and the far corners of Shanghai East. The is above ground rail that also loops from the South West of Shanghai, through Zhongshan Park, to the Train Station, and off into the North of Puxi. Its a great system hitting most major areas and more is being built all the time.
