French Concession - Know More

The French Concession occupied the centre, south and west of Shanghai urban area, covering the Xuhui District and Luwan District. It extended eastward along the rue du Consulat, now the East Jinling Road, to the Quai de France, now East-2 Zhongshan Road, which runs along the Huangpu River to the south of the Bund.

This area also boasts of many historical sites and charming tourist spots, like the Fuxing Park, Longhua Temple and Longhua Pagoda, Old French Concession Streets, Sun Yat-sen's Former Residence, Former Residence of Soong Ching Ling, Zhou Enlai's Former Residence, etc.

Fuxing Park fuxing park

The beautiful leafy park, laid out by the French in 1909 and later used by the Japanese as a parade ground in the late 1930s, remains one of the city's more pleasant. The park heavily shaded by big-leafed wutong trees, is an excellent place to take a seat and escape the summer sun and there is a popular children's playground. Wreathed in the laughter of children, the huge stony-faced busts of Karl Marx and Friedrich Engels gaze out from a seemingly redundant epoch.

Longhua Temple and Longhua Pagoda

Longhua Park is well-known for its ancient Longhua Temple, Longhua Pagoda, the Evening Bell-Striking Ceremony and peach blossoms. It is located on Longhua Road at the south of Shanghai Municipality.

Longhua Temple and Longhua PagodaLonghua Temple is the oldest temple in Shanghai, which first built in 242 during the Three Kingdoms Period (220-280). Due to damages caused by several wars, most of the buildings at the temple were reconstructed during the reign of the emperors Tongzhi and Guangxu of the Qing Dynasty (1644-1911).

With seven-storied and 40.4 meters tall, the Longhua Pagoda stands in front of Longhua Temple. Its brick body and wooden staircases make up the main structure of the pagoda. Each storey is smaller than the one below, and all of its levels are encircled by balconies and banisters. Bells in each corner of the octagonal eaves ring cheerfully as the wind passes through. Although the Pagoda has been rebuilt several times, it has retained the style of the Song Dynasty (960-1279).

In late spring each year, when peach trees at Longhua Park are in full bloom and the temple fair (March 3rd of the lunar calendar) is under way, Longhua comes to life.
