		Suzhou is one of the oldest towns in China, with a history stretching back 2500 years. Originally a city in the State of Wu, during the Qin dynasty it was named Wuxian. It was renamed Suzhou in 589 AD when the Sui dynasty conquered southern China and it was made a prefecture. With the completion of the Grand Canal in 609 AD, Suzhou grew rapidly as a center of shipping and grain storage.
