The predecessor of Huangshan City is Huizhou, know as Xin’an in ancient China. It is a newly-rising tourist city named after Mt. Huangshan, consisting of the Mt. Huangshan Scenic Area, three districts and four counties. Covering an area of 9,807 square kilometers, with a population of 1.45 million, Huangshan City is a holiday resort with beautiful landscape, many places of interest, and brilliant local culture. Shexian and Yixian are two famous counties of Huangshan City with a long history of more than 2,000 years and splendid cultures. The city was famous for Hui architecture, Hui businessmen, Hui carvings, Xin'an school of painting, Xin'an medicine, Hui cuisine, and Hui opera (one of the tonalities of Beijing Opera). Mt. Huangshan is one of the most important scenic spots in ancient China. Historians at home and abroad regard Huangshan City as a natural history and culture museum of China.

There are two world heritage sites approved by UNESCO, in 1990’s in this region. One is Mt. Huangshan (Yellow Mountian) which was declared a World Natural and Cultural Heritage by UNESCO Heritage Committee. Another world culture heritage proved by UNESCO--Ancient Villages in Southern Anhui - Xidi and Hongcun.

"Huangshan, known as 'the loveliest mountain of China', was acclaimed through art and literature during a good part of Chinese history (e.g. the Shanshui 'mountain and water' style of the mid-16th century). Today it holds the same fascination for visitors, poets, painters and photographers who come on pilgrimage to the site, which is renowned for its magnificent scenery made up of many granite peaks and rocks emerging out of a sea of clouds. Nowadays, Huangshan City is the one of the most popular tourist city in China. Except enjoy the natural beauty of Mt. Huangshan, you will also have chances to learn ancient Chinese culture by visiting Tangyue Memorial Archway, the Tunxi Ancient Street and the ancient villages of Yixian County.

Huangshan City transportation is efficient. You can get there by air, train, or bus. The accommodation is also convenient. Hotels from 5 to 3 star can be easily found in the downtown of the city. Various restaurants and recreation and shopping centers make you trip there easily.

Be sure to try Hui dishes, snacks and local products and especially the memorable Mt. Huangshan Maofeng tea.
